Types of Driving Licence

Provisional Driving Licence (1 Year)

After successfully passed the driving test, drivers can apply for a Provisional Driving Licence which is valid for one (1) year)

Full Driving Licence (1, 3, 5 Year or 10 Years)

  • Renewal from Provisional Driving Licence after one (1) year period to a Full Driving Licence
  • Full Driving Licence can be chosen either for a period of 1, 3, 5 or 10 years (for Class 1 and 3 Driving Licence only)
  • For holders of driving licences for commercial and public service vehicles (foreign drivers) and those aged 70 years and above, their driving licences are only valid for one (1) year.

International Driving Permits (1 Year)

  • Apply for an International Driving Permit (IDP) from the Land Transport Department (at Training and Driving Test Circuit Complex, at LTD Sg. Akar)
  • IDP Permit allows to drive a private vehicle (Class 1 or Class 3 or similar class of driving licence) in a foreign country and is valid for a year.
  • The validity of Brunei Driving Licence must not be less than a year in order for you to be eligible to apply for an IDP.
  • A foreigner holding a foreign driving licence must have an IDP issued by the relevant authority in their country of origin if they want to drive in Brunei Darussalam.

Conversion of Foreign Driving Licence to Brunei Driving Licence

Brunei Darussalam allows:

Short-term stay (up to 1 year)

Foreigners holding a foreign driving licence for private vehicles issued by countries that are party to the 1949 Geneva Convention to drive in the Sultanate for not more than a year.

Longer stay or commercial licence

Foreigners who wish to reside in Brunei Darussalam longer than 1 year or foreigners holding a foreign driving licence for commercial or public service vehicles can apply for a Brunei driving licence.

Lost or Damaged Driving Licence

Steps to be taken:

  1. Make a police report

    Required for lost driving licence only.

  2. Visit a JPD branch

    Go to any of the JPD branch by bringing the police report (for lost driving licence only) or the damaged driving licence.

  3. Submit the application

    Fill in the application form and bring it to the Licensing Officer.

  4. Pay the replacement fee

    After a permit is given, go to the counter and pay a renewal Driving Licence fee of $10.00 for a copy of the licence.

    Fee: BND $10.00 for a replacement copy of the licence.

Change on Personal Details

  • If customers made any changes on their personal details such as marriage status, address or smart card number, the customer should inform the JPD about these changes within one month from the date of change.

Important: If the change occurs when you're outside of Brunei Darussalam, you must notify the JPD WITHIN ONE MONTH you return to Brunei Darussalam.

Methods Informing Changes of Personal Details

There are several methods provided by LTD facilitating the public to inform of any changes in their personal details, namely:

SMS

Send SMS to LTD's mobile number: +6737181641 by typing the Name, Smart Identification Card No., Mobile Phone No. (Only one number being actively used) and an active email.

Drop box

Fill in completely the provided form and put inside a box specifically provided for updating personal information of drivers. The box is placed at the LTD's Headquarters and at all LTD's branches in the other 3 districts.

In person

Inform directly to the clerk on duty at the counter at LTD.
